Cellular blood components for the following patients/situations should be irradiated to reduce the risk of transfusion associated graft-versus-host disease:[1]

  • Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant recipients
  • HSC transplant candidates under some circumstances
  • HSC donors if allogeneic transfusion must be given prior to completing the harvest
  • Congenital T-cell immune deficiency
  • Intrauterine or neonatal exchange transfusion
  • Transfusion from family members or HLA-selected donors
  • Patients who have had fludarabine chemotherapy
  • Hodgkin’s disease
  • Leukemia
  • Lymphoproliferative disorders
  • Granulocyte transfusion
  • Neonates
  • Aggressive chemotherapy, radiotherapy or T-cell immunosuppression
