Microscopic evaluation

Generally perform c-Kit immunohistochemistry to detect any gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST),[1] and optionally addition of CD34 (both typically being positive in GIST). In contrast, leiomyomas can be confirmed with positive staining for actin, and optionally addition of desmin (with leiomyomas typically being positive for these and negative for c-Kit and CD34).
