This article includes colostomies, and other surgical non-rectal connections between the intestine and the skin. It also includes "donuts", which are ring-shaped pieces of large bowel from a circular end-to-end stapling device.

Gross processing
For stoma and donuts:
- Count the number of pieces and measure at least the maximum dimension of each.
- Note any gross lesions.
- Submit sections that include both mucosa and skin if detected.
Example report:
(A. Labeled -colostomy site donuts. The specimen is received in formalin and consists of) 3 {{donut-shaped}} fragments of tissue partly covered by mucosa, measuring from 1.5 up to 6.5 cm in maximum dimension.
