Microscopic evaluation

Generally screen for gastritis, with neutrophils indicating acute gastritis and plasma cells indicating chronic gastritis.[1][2]

Also look for signs of reactive gastropathy which is a triad of:[3]

  • Foveolar hyperplasia, generally seen as a tortuosity in the "neck" region of the gastric glands.
  • Smooth muscle hyperplasia.
  • Scant acute and chronic inflammatory cells.
